Photos from New York

A trip to the Big Apple in 2007

These photos were taken in New York, in January of 2007.

Arriving at Laguardia. The weather was beautiful all weekend, and I wore either a t-shirt or light sweatshirt. Pretty crazy considering that it was the middle of winter.

Our first stop was to the liquor store, for some green apple rum, a big bottle of Bushmill's Irish Cream, and a few bottles of white wine. I couldn't resist picking up this bottle just for the label, although I was scared to taste it. The company slogan was, "They have our name and heritage, sold us into bondage, but they didn't get our goat."

Sushi for dinner on Friday night. Yes, I like taking photos of fairly random items.

On Friday night we went to Pacha. I see that my bar isn't the only one with a lineup of about 150 people at the coat check.

This photo was taken early in the night, before the club started to really fill up, from the second floor, on stage right of the DJ booth.

This photo was taken from up on the third floor, looking down at stage left of the booth, as Gabriel & Dresden are getting set up.

This was on the third floor. It's a bit blurry, and I should have walked over and gotten a better shot, but the brighter area in the background of this photo is a private room with showers where girls in bikinis were dancing in the showers.

Looking down on the main floor as the club started to fill up.

Another shot of the main floor.

And another.

Josh Gabriel in the foreground, Dave Dresden behind him.

Here's Dave, yelling and singing to people on the dance floor.

This couple were great dancers, so I got quite a few photos of them.

A photo from in the booth. Unfortunately, I just use a simple digital camera (not an SLR) so you can't really see the true size of the dance floor here.

Pacha's main DJ booth.

A photo taken on Saturday afternoon on the ferry to Staten Island. That big yellow thing in the top right is a light on the ferry, not a UFO.

Passing the Statue of Liberty. We didn't go in to visit it this time - that'll have to wait for the next trip.

Coming back to Manhatten at dusk.

Statue of the bull by the end of Wall Street, the heart of the city's financial district.

Street sign on the corner of Wall & Broadway.

A view down Wall Street, which is blocked off to through traffic.

Reconstruction of the World Trade Centers.

Another photo at Ground Zero.

The number 10 fire station, located only a few meters from the edge of the reconstruction zone at Ground Zero.

Photos at the WTC monument.

A broader view of the monument.

Names of people who perished in the attack and in recovery efforts.

Later in the evening, we went to Crocodile Rock for beer & pizza. The sign wasn't kidding, you really get a pizza with every beer. I can't begin to imagine how many pizzas they must have given out on Saturday night.

Later on Saturday night, we went to a club called Shelter. I saw a whole bunch of DJ's and producers that I knew, including D:Fuse and D-Formation. This photo is of Chloe Harris - I really liked the music that she was playing on the lower floor.

Not a great photo, but this is Tone Depth in the background, talking to Chloe.

A pretty dark & fuzzy photo in the upstairs DJ booth, but it's the only one I got.

This will teach you not to waste fuel (helps cut down on smog in the city).

I really have no idea why I took this photo, except that maybe I was amused by the settings on the microwave for snack foods, where most microwaves would just list "meat" and "fish" and things like that.

Times Square on Sunday evening.

We ran into Melissa Prince and Mike Taylor in Times Square, two old friends of mine from University. We went to the bar in the Marriot Marquis, overlooking Times Square, for drinks. Melissa was just visiting from Toronto, and Mike lives in Chelsea.

A photo of Polly & I, taken in Times Square.

A street performer.

The MTV Studios.

After Times Square, Polly took me out to dinner at a Mexican place with really, really good food. I was also pretty impressed by the different tequilas and mezcals on the menu. Mezcal is not common in Canada, but I'm a big fan. For those who've never had it, it's kind of like tequila, but with more of a charred flavour, sort of like a peaty scotch whiskey tastes when compared to rye whiskey.
