Mike Allison is not a DJ. Mike Allison is an artist and academic from small-town Canada. Mike's musical "career" began with a rousing rendition of "Wasn't That a Party?" performed for the local priest. He was three years old, and as he puts it, "Still learning to read a crowd.”
Twenty-odd years later, with a whole lot of songs to his credit, Mike still has a strong connection with the back roads of New Brunswick where he grew up. The influence of acoustic legends like Bob Dylan and John Denver isn't exactly subtle in Mike's music, but while his lyrics often draw inspiration from the literary giants he has studied all his life, they just as often spring from personal tales of friendship and love.
After earning the right to represent his school (Mount Allison University) at the Atlantic Universities' "Campus Sound Explosion” in 1999, Mike teamed up with accomplished Halifax artist/producer Jon Epworth to cut his first CD. Mike then left Mount Allison in 2000 and moved to Acadia University, where he completed a Masters Degree in English. While writing and performing at Acadia, Mike appeared on that university's "Constellation" compilation, and also recorded a track for the first-ever "Conduct Becoming: Mount Allison Voices Against Cancer" compilation. Conduct Becoming has gone on to release eight successful albums, two of which were produced by Mike himself.
Mike has made his living as a teacher, a writer, a performer, and even as a "rock picker" in the potato fields of his hometown. He has written award-winning plays, and made the long trip to Toronto for an appearance as a finalist on Canadian Idol. He has shared the stage with Canadian legends such as the Rheostatics, and paid his dues at many of Atlantic Canada's dinner theatres, where he has become a legendary performer, writer and director.
With the recent release of “Tilting At Windmills,” and subsequent growth in radio play rotations all across Canada, Mike's popularity in the Canadian indie music scene is only set to grow in the future!
